Dark Sky Friendly Landscape Lighting for Oakland County Homes
The most common complaint we get on an existing system has nothing to do with the fixtures failing. It is that the lighting is annoying. A floodlight on the garage throws straight into the neighbor's bedroom. A path light glares in your eyes on the walk to the front door. Two uplights on a maple wash the whole canopy and half the sky above it. Nothing is broken. The design is just careless.
Good outdoor lighting is subtractive. You decide what deserves light, you put light only on that, and you keep it off everything else. That principle happens to be the same one behind the dark sky movement, which is why the best-looking landscape lighting on an Oakland County property and the most responsible landscape lighting are usually the same installation.
The Five Principles, in Plain Terms
DarkSky International and the Illuminating Engineering Society jointly publish the Five Principles for Responsible Outdoor Lighting. They read like a lighting designer's checklist because that is essentially what they are.

Fixtures certified under the DarkSky Approved program have to emit no light above 90 degrees from horizontal and cap out at 3000K correlated color temperature. That is a useful shorthand when you are shopping, but the certification on the box matters less than where the installer points the thing.
Glare Is the Problem You Notice First
Light trespass and glare get talked about together, and they are different failures. Trespass is light landing where it was not wanted, usually across a lot line. Glare is the lamp itself being visible, which makes your pupils contract and everything around the fixture look darker than it is.
Glare is the one homeowners feel immediately. A path light with an exposed lamp under a shallow hat sends light sideways into your eyes at exactly walking height. A well light aimed straight up the face of a stone chimney will also aim straight into a second-floor window if nobody thought about the elevation. And a bullet uplight in a bed with no shroud is a small spotlight pointed at whoever walks past it.
The fixes are mostly hardware you can add: glare guards and honeycomb louvers on bullets, deeper cowls on path lights, hex baffles on well lights. On a system we design from scratch, this gets specified up front, which is part of what goes into our custom lighting design plans.
What the Ordinance Actually Says Around Here
There is no county-wide rule. Oakland County does not control local planning and zoning, so Bloomfield Township, Birmingham, Troy, Rochester Hills, and West Bloomfield each set their own exterior lighting standards in their zoning ordinances, and they are not identical.
What most of them share is a limit measured at the property line in footcandles. Sterling Heights over in Macomb County publishes a clear version of the pattern: light trespass may not exceed 0.1 footcandles at ground level at a residential property line, or 2 footcandles where the line separates commercial or industrial uses. Numbers in that neighborhood are typical, but do not assume your township matches. If you are planning a large install, a call to your community's planning department before the design is finished costs nothing and can save a rework.

Color Temperature Does Double Duty
The 3000K ceiling exists because blue-rich light scatters more in the atmosphere, so cooler light contributes disproportionately to skyglow for the same output. That is the environmental argument.
The aesthetic argument points the same way. Warm light around 2700K to 3000K makes brick read warm, makes limestone read like limestone instead of concrete, and makes green foliage look green rather than gray-blue. Aiming: Where Most Systems Go Wrong
Uplights on trees
An uplight set too far from the trunk with too wide a beam lights the canopy and then keeps going into the sky. Move the fixture closer, narrow the beam angle, and aim into the structure of the tree rather than through it. On a mature oak or maple you want the trunk and the inside of the canopy lit, with the light dying out before the top.
Wall washes
Set the fixture close to the wall and let the beam graze up the surface. Pull it back and you are lighting the wall plus everything above the roofline. Grazing also brings out texture in brick and stone, which is the whole reason to light a facade.
Path lights
Path lights are for the path. Space them so pools of light overlap slightly at ground level, keep them low, and do not line them up like runway markers. Two fixtures aimed well beat six fixtures aimed nowhere. There is more on this in our comparison of path lighting and uplighting.
Security fixtures
A single bright floodlight is the worst security lighting there is, because the glare blinds you and the contrast creates black shadows an intruder can stand in. Lower, more even, shielded light gives better real visibility and much better camera footage, which we cover in our piece on landscape lighting and home security.
Controls Are the Cheapest Improvement Available
The single easiest thing most homeowners can do is stop running the system all night. An astronomic timer turns the lights on at dusk and off at a set hour, so the display exists during the evening when people are actually outside and shuts down when nobody is looking at it. Motion sensing handles the driveway and side yard. Photocells alone are the weakest option, because they hold the system on until sunrise.

A Walk-Around You Can Do Tonight
- Stand at each property line after dark and look back at the house. Any fixture whose lamp you can see directly needs shielding or re-aiming.
- Look up. If you can see beams in the air above the tree line, light is escaping.
- Walk the path at normal speed. If you squint or the ground between fixtures goes black, the levels are wrong, not too low.
- Check what is on at 1 a.m. If everything is, the system needs a timer.
- Look at the color. If the foliage reads gray or the brick reads pink-purple, the lamps are too cool.

How do I stop my landscape lights from bothering my neighbors?
Start by looking at the fixture from your neighbor's side of the line. If you can see the lamp itself, that is glare and it needs a shroud, a deeper cowl, or a different aim. Lower the wattage, tilt uplights tighter to the trunk or wall, add glare guards to path lights, and move any fixture that throws across a property line rather than along it.
Does shielded lighting make a property less secure?
No, and often the opposite. Glare from an unshielded floodlight creates dark pockets your eye cannot adjust to, which is worse for seeing an intruder than lower, even, shielded light. Uniform low-level illumination with no bright source in the field of view gives better visibility on camera and in person than one harsh fixture.
Can I retrofit an existing system to be dark sky friendly?
Usually yes, and it rarely means replacing everything. Most of the improvement comes from re-aiming fixtures, adding shrouds and glare guards, swapping lamps down to a lower output and warmer color temperature, and putting the system on an astronomic timer. Fixture replacement is the last step, reserved for housings that cannot be shielded.
